AI security sparks fresh debate in every hallway conversation. Yet when ransomware hits, many organizations still find themselves stuck for a far more basic reason. Their endpoints are no longer usable at scale.
That tension shaped our recent Across the Tech Pond conversation with IGEL CEO Klaus Oestermann. We recorded the discussion after attending IGEL’s end-user computing events in Miami and Frankfurt, where the focus moved beyond product launches toward a more practical question. What actually allows work to continue when systems come under attack?
Endpoint resilience rarely headlines analyst reports or board briefings, but it plays a decisive role once theory meets reality. When devices fail, productivity stalls, even if data remains untouched.
Cloud First Shifted Responsibility, Not Risk
Cloud adoption promised simplification. By moving workloads away from local machines and into centralized environments, many organizations assumed endpoints would fade into the background. In practice, responsibility shifted rather than disappeared, and the endpoint quietly assumed a new role that carried its own risks.
Today, endpoints sit at the intersection of virtual desktop infrastructure, desktop-as-a-service, and software-as-a-service. Secure browsers, identity checks, session controls, and access policies all terminate at the device. When that device becomes unstable or compromised, the rest of the stack struggles to compensate, regardless of how resilient the cloud layer may be.
Klaus highlighted a misconception that persists across many IT teams. Because data now lives elsewhere, endpoints are often treated as less risky than before. In reality, endpoints have become the primary gatekeepers to systems, applications, and workflows. When they fail, access fails with them, and recovery stalls at the very edge of the organization.

Recovery Planning Often Starts Too Late
Business continuity discussions usually begin with data. Backup integrity, replication strategies, and secondary sites dominate planning sessions, and for good reason. These elements matter. But they often overlook the first experience employees face after an attack, which is far more basic. Can I log in and do my job today?
When a large number of endpoints require reimaging or manual recovery, timelines quickly stretch. Days turn into weeks, and sometimes months. Data may be available and systems technically restored, yet productivity remains frozen because users cannot access them safely or consistently.
This gap between data readiness and user access is where many recovery strategies quietly fall apart. The endpoint becomes the bottleneck, even in organizations that believed they had prepared thoroughly for disruption.
Detection Became the Default Response
Most endpoint strategies still follow a familiar formula. Organizations start with a general-purpose operating system, layer multiple security tools on top, monitor activity closely, and respond when issues arise. The underlying assumption is that compromise will happen, and success depends on how quickly teams can react.
Klaus challenged that framing by asking a simpler question. What if the operating system itself reduced the opportunity for compromise? What if users could not write to the OS, and workloads ran in isolation by default, rather than relying on constant monitoring to catch problems after they appear?
This approach changes how systems behave day-to-day. Fewer moving parts mean fewer failure points, and recovery becomes simpler because there is less complexity to unwind. It does not promise immunity, but it shifts the balance toward stability rather than constant remediation.
Operational Stability Shows Its Value During Incidents
One of the more understated insights from the conversation focused on operations rather than security theory. Locked-down environments tend to generate fewer help desk calls over time, complete updates faster, and fail less often under normal conditions. These benefits are often overlooked until something breaks.
That stability becomes particularly valuable during an incident. When teams are under pressure, predictability matters. Fewer variables reduce confusion and help organizations make clearer decisions when time is limited and information is incomplete.
Security improves in these environments because systems behave consistently, even under stress. That consistency supports faster recovery and reduces the cognitive load on teams, restoring normal operations.
Endpoint Resilience Is a Business Continuity Decision
Disaster recovery strategies often assume endpoints will recover eventually. That assumption carries risk. Klaus described scenarios where endpoints became the pacing factor for recovery, even after servers and networks were restored and technically available.
Work does not resume until devices do. Rebuilding thousands of machines takes time that many organizations cannot afford, particularly in healthcare, manufacturing, and public sector environments where downtime has immediate and visible consequences.
This reframes endpoint strategy as a business continuity decision rather than a purely technical one. Leaders need to consider how quickly people can regain safe access at scale, and what happens if the primary operating environment becomes unusable overnight.
Designing for Fast Fallback Rather Than Perfect Recovery
One idea that came through clearly in the interview was to use a fallback rather than a replacement. The goal is to keep existing environments intact while maintaining a secure path in case an attack forces a change of plan. Teams rarely have the luxury of rebuilding every endpoint immediately, especially when the business still needs to operate.
From a practical standpoint, this shifts how recovery is measured. Instead of waiting for full restoration before work can resume, the focus moves to restoring safe access quickly, while longer repair work continues in parallel. That changes how organizations evaluate endpoint preparedness and risk tolerance.
It also changes spending decisions. Investment is shifting away from repeated, large-scale rebuild efforts toward controlled recovery paths that can be tested, rehearsed, and executed under pressure. This is the difference between a plan that looks solid on paper and one that supports real work during the most chaotic phase of an incident.
Zero Trust Still Depends on Endpoint Trust
Zero trust frameworks promise tighter control through continuous verification of identity and access. Yet identity checks still rely on the device requesting access being in a known and enforceable state. Without that foundation, policy enforcement becomes inconsistent.
Endpoints operate across offices, hospitals, factories, and shared spaces. They rotate users, change locations, and face inconsistent conditions throughout the day. Without a stable endpoint posture, zero trust policies become fragile and harder to manage at scale.
Klaus described IGEL’s position as neutral ground between identity systems, security services, and application delivery. The endpoint becomes the place where policy actually holds, rather than an assumed constant that everyone hopes behaves correctly.
AI Is Pulling Security Back Toward the Device
AI workloads are moving closer to users. Models increasingly run locally, inference happens at the edge, and sensitive data touches endpoints more frequently than before. This shift changes the threat profile in ways many organizations are still absorbing.
Endpoints no longer serve only as access points. They become execution environments for intellectual property and decision logic that require stronger protection and more precise boundaries.
Klaus framed this shift as the endpoint evolving into a secure enclave. Trust must extend from device to cloud and back again if AI adoption is to scale safely across different teams and environments.
Cost Outcomes Follow Simplicity
The conversation also touched on cost reductions reported by IGEL customers, but the more interesting insight was why those savings occur. Simpler systems demand less maintenance over time, generate fewer incidents, and create less operational noise.
That stability translates into longer hardware lifecycles, smaller software stacks, and fewer support escalations. These outcomes appear to be a byproduct of predictability rather than of aggressive cost-cutting initiatives.

Why This Conversation Matters Right Now
Endpoint security remains underrepresented in long-term planning and analyst coverage. Yet when attacks happen, endpoints determine how long the disruption lasts and how painful the recovery becomes.
Changes in the Windows lifecycle, rising compliance pressure, and decentralized AI workloads are forcing organizations to revisit assumptions that have gone unchallenged for years. The endpoint is no longer a background concern that can be postponed.
