[00:02:42] [SPEAKER_00]: So I massively welcome to the show, Jeff. County, so I've only seen a little about who you are and what

[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_01]: you do. Oh, thank you so much. The only name is Jeff Holstead and retired chief of police.

[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I served 27 years in law enforcement. First with Phoenix Police Department in Arizona,

[00:03:00] [SPEAKER_01]: I retired at the RICA Commander and then I got the chief of police job in Fort Worth, Texas.

[00:03:05] [SPEAKER_01]: It's a big agency, 800,000 residents, 2100 employees. I retired from law enforcement in 2015.

[00:03:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Became a global police consultant. My expertise was implementing new and emerging technologies

[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_01]: and law enforcement. But then I had this desire to build an intelligent sharing platform or at

[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_01]: least try to find one to help agencies find suspect spaster and solve cases faster.

[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Nobody had one, so I met with very wealthy investor and a couple of genius engineers. We built

[00:03:38] [SPEAKER_01]: what is known as Genesis Connect way back in 2017 and we've been serving agencies

[00:03:44] [SPEAKER_01]: in the US at a few agencies abroad since then. Absolutely, lovely. Every episode. I'll try

[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_00]: to get people to think him differently about how technology is impacting almost every expert

[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_00]: aspect of our life, our work, and indeed well now I don't do well to medically associate

[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_00]: technology with the police. So I've got to ask, I mean you told me a little there but how did

[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_00]: the idea for Genesis Connect originate and what specific challenges in emergency respond communication

[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_01]: did you ultimately add into address from the outset? Oh, actually the idea came from just

[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_01]: working multiple jobs. So my last job at the Phoenix Police Department, I ran the State of Arizona

[00:04:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Fusion Center and for those not familiar with what a Fusion Center is, we collect all the

[00:04:30] [SPEAKER_01]: intelligence, both careous activity, organized crime, one in fugitive information. We collected in

[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_01]: one location and then distributed across the entire state or multiple states. But that process was too

[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_01]: long. It just took a long time email us a curling login to the FBI or the secure portal

[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_01]: download the information print it and put it in briefing books. And I thought, okay this is

[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_01]: taken one to two days for officers have the latest and greatest intelligence. I wanted it immediate

[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_01]: because the rest of the world is communicating instantly. And here we are stuck in an email portal

[00:05:09] [SPEAKER_01]: waiting for this top secret and above intelligence to be unclassified so we can share it. That gave

[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_01]: me the idea that law enforcement needs the ability to instantly securely and legally share

[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_01]: absolute extreme intelligence on every technology device to any other agency they want. That's

[00:05:30] [SPEAKER_00]: why we built the product. For people listening outside of the world, a law enforcement in what

[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_00]: ways does Genesis connect different from platforms they might be more familiar with like Slack or

[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Microsoft teams especially in the context of mission critical situations like say I don't

[00:05:47] [SPEAKER_00]: know anything from an active shooting to a natural disaster. Yeah you bring up probably

[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_01]: the two most challenging situations unknown weather events or national disasters and then

[00:06:00] [SPEAKER_01]: out in America we just had this challenge with active shooter and mass shootings. So what differs

[00:06:06] [SPEAKER_01]: the Genesis Connect platform from the rest of all communications or what's considered crisis

[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_01]: communications platform? The first is we greatly protect the identity and the accessibility of

[00:06:20] [SPEAKER_01]: everyone in law enforcement. Meaning every agency literally owns all of their accessibility,

[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_01]: the encryption keys to get into the platform and they own all of the attachment links, documents,

[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_01]: bulletins, everything they own at all. We do not own it as a technology company so that's why

[00:06:38] [SPEAKER_01]: we're a little different than like big tech and then the second one is and this is the most powerful.

[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_01]: On Genesis Connect I can share my intelligence on any situation at any time on any device

[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_01]: to any agency and they don't have to be customers and it's completely free. That is absolutely key

[00:06:59] [SPEAKER_01]: when you're working a mission critical or a life threatening natural disaster or critical event.

[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_01]: You need 10, 15, 20 different agencies all working together. We make that happen through our mobile

[00:07:12] [SPEAKER_01]: app in about 15 seconds. None of them have to be customers. You don't have to pay for their

[00:07:18] [SPEAKER_01]: access or data and for finally in you know in the states we now have true interoperability. I don't

[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_01]: matter all tax within the Genesis Connect platform. All of these other agencies come in. We're

[00:07:33] [SPEAKER_01]: all now sharing on the same platform that I own control and that's absolutely key to get

[00:07:38] [SPEAKER_01]: these situations resolved and get life back the normal. And just to bring everything that we're

[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_00]: talking about to life today, I'm not sure if you are able to share any here but are you able

[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_00]: to share any examples of how Genesis Connect has been used in real-time scenarios, it wildfires or

[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_00]: etc. What the outcomes were and I have to platform ultimately and Hamst communication and coordination

[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_01]: anything spring tomorrow on there? Oh boy, I have so many. I'm going to give you three really short

[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_01]: examples that are great. So in America when we add the George Floyd protests in the summer of 2020

[00:08:15] [SPEAKER_01]: these were massive, dangerous and very destructive protests. There are a lot of arson's and fires and

[00:08:22] [SPEAKER_01]: violent towards law enforcement. One of our first like major city departments is the Baltimore

[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_01]: City Police Department they utilized the Genesis Connect platform to instantly share updated intelligence

[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_01]: because they had undercover officers all over the protest route and they would hear where they're

[00:08:41] [SPEAKER_01]: going to go next to burn a building, break windows or try to loot businesses and then that instant

[00:08:47] [SPEAKER_01]: communication because it only takes about an eighth of a second to get that information distributed

[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_01]: all across every agency work and they could stage all of their riot response teams at the location

[00:08:59] [SPEAKER_01]: there went out walking down the street to damage. Not one building suffered an arson, not one building

[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_01]: suffered mass looting because we stayed ahead of the threat. So that's where it gets really a mission

[00:09:11] [SPEAKER_01]: critical type of platform. And then others is just one of the fugitives we add a suspect in

[00:09:18] [SPEAKER_01]: a mass shooting just north of Houston, Texas, the United States marshals utilize Genesis Protect

[00:09:24] [SPEAKER_01]: to connect to share intelligence and in about 10 minutes they brought in 15 different agencies all

[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_01]: working from their phones. They found the mass shooting suspect within hours once all these agencies

[00:09:38] [SPEAKER_01]: were integrated. Prior to this it might have taken weeks or months but now these suspects are

[00:09:45] [SPEAKER_01]: being found sometimes within an hour because all of the agencies are looking for the same

[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_00]: information and the same suspect at the same time. And the ability to track violence suspects and

[00:09:57] [SPEAKER_00]: coordinate mass protests is a coordinate jarring mass protest is crucial is something we've seen over here

[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_00]: the UK too recently and how does Genesis connect and sure that law enforcement and not just

[00:10:10] [SPEAKER_00]: law enforcement but public safety professionals too that they can collaborate effectively and

[00:10:15] [SPEAKER_01]: securely in such high pressure situation. Yeah, that's a great point and that was the foundation

[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_01]: of our platform. What we wanted was, regardless of what job you do or which agency you work for

[00:10:30] [SPEAKER_01]: at what level it doesn't matter to us. We know one of our customers has the need to bring in

[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_01]: all of these stakeholders so with the touch of a button they can literally send an encrypted

[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_01]: invitation under their control, bring all of these agencies in an unlimited number of personnel

[00:10:47] [SPEAKER_01]: into their encrypted platform completely free and now they're streamlining all communications

[00:10:53] [SPEAKER_01]: and telegence sharing and documentation of the critical incident instantly. So it does

[00:11:00] [SPEAKER_01]: it matter if you're a federal agency, if you're the fire department, law enforcement or

[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_01]: maybe an elected official if you're a critical stakeholder and you need to be in here

[00:11:10] [SPEAKER_01]: for the decision making processes and the information sharing it can happen fast and it can happen

[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_01]: and there are legally compliant platform and that's key because like a lot of agencies use

[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_01]: consumer applications. That was not built for disaster response and mission critical communication.

[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_01]: That was more of a social platform but because it has that connectivity, that is what we

[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_01]: wanted to leverage back in 2016 when we were designing this. Unilateral connectivity legally

[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_01]: secure platform but instantly shared so that we can get the business and save lives.

[00:11:46] [SPEAKER_00]: And what we're talking about today is a very universal problem and I suspect there'll be a lot of

[00:11:52] [SPEAKER_00]: people working in police departments, emergency responders that are dealing with things that they

[00:11:56] [SPEAKER_00]: never had to before and things do need to change. So what would you say at some of the

[00:12:01] [SPEAKER_00]: unique features, Genesis Connect feature that that make that are specifically tailored towards

[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_00]: these people and that we could have people working in these departments anywhere in the world.

[00:12:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Anything that you can share around this that just bring it to life even more?

[00:12:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think one couple of the most important ones is the agency owns and controls all

[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_01]: accessibility into the platform. Random citizens, hackers, activists, it's impossible to get into our

[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_01]: platform. You have to have the encrypted invitation links specifically from one of the supervisors

[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_01]: or the executive leaders in the agency. Otherwise you simply cannot get in. Then we have internal

[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_01]: verification processes and we have multiple verification processes so that we know like a chat

[00:12:48] [SPEAKER_01]: bot or a robot style accessibility is not going to gain entry our system. And then the second is

[00:12:56] [SPEAKER_01]: you can share anything and everything that you shared is stored in your cloud account and it's

[00:13:05] [SPEAKER_01]: an encrypted cloud account for future retention, meaning law enforcement is sued. It

[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_01]: were probably more sued than any other profession that I'm aware of in the world.

[00:13:17] [SPEAKER_01]: And then you're going to need that information that you share to year and a half ago.

[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_01]: It takes about 10 seconds to get that information once a litigation is filed against an agency.

[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_01]: They can pull all the documents, the information, the decisions, the responses,

[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_01]: everything is in their portal. They don't have to ask a technology company for accessibility.

[00:13:37] [SPEAKER_01]: It's their portal in the cloud they can grab it at any time.

[00:13:41] [SPEAKER_00]: So for any IT team listening, the first question that I'm going to be talking about or

[00:13:46] [SPEAKER_00]: asking about is integration. How does it integrate with existing emergency response systems?

[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Also what kind of feedback have you had from police departments and fire departments that

[00:13:57] [SPEAKER_01]: already adopt at the platform? Well the integration we are open to integrate with any other

[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_01]: system. The couple of things that we are very cautious of and our IT leaders actually respect this,

[00:14:11] [SPEAKER_01]: we will not integrate with a competing style platform. The technology industry is extremely competitive.

[00:14:18] [SPEAKER_01]: When we don't want them to see a lot of our magical features in our secret sauce that we

[00:14:24] [SPEAKER_01]: in the system. So we're very cautious, but we can integrate with any standing IT related system

[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_01]: that helps law enforcement gather data, share information or distribute intelligence.

[00:14:36] [SPEAKER_01]: We just give the machine the capacity to share with a lot of horsepower and a lot of

[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_01]: energy so that the right data gets to the right people instantly. And then the other one is

[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_01]: the feedback has been absolutely incredible for a few reasons. One, our engineers do an amazing

[00:14:54] [SPEAKER_01]: job of listening to what the platform needs to do today and what they expected to do in the future.

[00:15:03] [SPEAKER_01]: So our churn rate and for those not intact, these are people that we're a customer but leave,

[00:15:08] [SPEAKER_01]: our churn rate is very, very low. It's about 1.4%. That means 98.6% of our customers stay our

[00:15:19] [SPEAKER_01]: they believe in the product, they have unilateral connectivity and true interoperability

[00:15:24] [SPEAKER_01]: on a legally secure platform so they don't lead. And then our future services that we are going

[00:15:31] [SPEAKER_01]: to launch not only the later this calendar year but at 2025, it will now separate us from all other

[00:15:38] [SPEAKER_01]: considered competition platforms because we're going to have in large scale mass notifications

[00:15:44] [SPEAKER_01]: and mass resource deployment opportunities instantaneously within given stage or multiple

[00:15:50] [SPEAKER_00]: states. So a lot of good stuff come on our way. I think a time where real-time communication

[00:15:57] [SPEAKER_00]: can save lives, especially when the bad guys are all using technology to organize a process, etc.

[00:16:04] [SPEAKER_00]: So what role do you see, Genesis Connect playing in the future of public safety and indeed emergency

[00:16:10] [SPEAKER_01]: response? Well, Genesis acquired our company last year and do what really I was excited about is

[00:16:20] [SPEAKER_01]: they have a multi-tier public safety solution called Genesis Protect. These are five different

[00:16:27] [SPEAKER_01]: software solution systems for every critical incident disaster earthquake. You name the disaster

[00:16:36] [SPEAKER_01]: scenario, we have multiple solutions to help coordinate a few critical things, mass notification to the

[00:16:45] [SPEAKER_01]: public. When that critical incident occurs you will as a citizen and a resident you want to know

[00:16:50] [SPEAKER_01]: immediately what's happening, what do I need to do and where do I need to go to stay safe and keep my

[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_01]: family alive? We provide that. We also provide instant evacuation support. Literally right to your

[00:17:03] [SPEAKER_01]: advice is you're going to get mapping coordinates to show you this area is under evacuation and this

[00:17:09] [SPEAKER_01]: is the route you need to take to get out of your safely and securely. That's absolutely critical

[00:17:14] [SPEAKER_01]: when you talk about massive scale, you know, evacuations in different parts of cities and counties

[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_01]: and states. And then the other one is mass notifications on a public scale so for like a demonstration

[00:17:26] [SPEAKER_01]: of larger protests. Standing there with a bullhorn and trying to yell to a crowd of 500 to 2000

[00:17:33] [SPEAKER_01]: people absolutely ineffective. But that's what they did for many decades with Genesis acoustics and

[00:17:41] [SPEAKER_01]: our L-RAND system or long-range acoustic device, crystal clear communication to a scale within

[00:17:48] [SPEAKER_01]: a mile or greater so it looks like we're having a conversation and you could be half mile away but

[00:17:54] [SPEAKER_01]: you're going to hear me just as clear as I was standing a foot away from you. So that's actually

[00:17:58] [SPEAKER_01]: critical to get clean and clear instructions on what the crowd needs to do to stay safe

[00:18:04] [SPEAKER_01]: and utilize the first amendment right to protest here in the United States.

[00:18:10] [SPEAKER_00]: And with any new tech project there are always a few TV problems people are adapting to

[00:18:16] [SPEAKER_00]: change, change of culture etc so I don't want to make it sound like what we're talking about

[00:18:22] [SPEAKER_00]: here is just incredible ease and you just flick a switch and everything works. So what were

[00:18:25] [SPEAKER_00]: main challenges you faced in getting all enforcement agencies to adopt new technologies like Genesis

[00:18:31] [SPEAKER_00]: connected? How are you working to overcome these obstacles and take away some of that fear that

[00:18:37] [SPEAKER_01]: you make up across? Yeah, you boy when you said the word change so now this has been 36 years

[00:18:44] [SPEAKER_01]: serving a law enforcement both as a senior administrator and as a consultant. There's a phrase in

[00:18:55] [SPEAKER_01]: that stand change and they cannot stand things that stay the same so they really kind of

[00:19:02] [SPEAKER_01]: fight themselves internally. What helped us early on was I did all of their jobs and I was kind

[00:19:10] [SPEAKER_01]: of like a one person marketing machine and selling division. I knew what they needed I would have to

[00:19:18] [SPEAKER_01]: gain their trust. Thankfully I had a relationship with many of these agencies in their leadership

[00:19:23] [SPEAKER_01]: and they trusted us. This was built just for their profession and then we grew to all of public

[00:19:30] [SPEAKER_01]: safety and then city county state and federal government but they really have to have a trusting

[00:19:36] [SPEAKER_01]: relationship with you otherwise they are not going to try something new just because it's new. They

[00:19:41] [SPEAKER_01]: want to see a tried intrusion that was specifically created for the challenges they're facing

[00:19:47] [SPEAKER_01]: and that's exactly what the Genesis platform does in a multitude of software solutions.

[00:20:49] [SPEAKER_01]: but for 22 days I didn't know if she was going to survive according to our neurologist here in the

[00:20:55] [SPEAKER_01]: states. So there's a song called your hand in mind by explosions in the sky and there's no

[00:21:02] [SPEAKER_01]: words but the music is transcending and for days and days all I did was hold my wife's hand

[00:21:10] [SPEAKER_01]: and pray for her health and I played that song constantly when I was away from her and when she was

[00:21:15] [SPEAKER_01]: the intensive care unit it just brought me back to a very calming and the music is very soothing

[00:21:24] [SPEAKER_01]: but I knew the love of my life needed my attention. My thoughts and my prayers and all I could do

[00:21:28] [SPEAKER_01]: was hold our hand and that's exactly what I did. She's great now we're actually planning a couple

[00:21:34] [SPEAKER_01]: of vacations but going through traumatic incident like that music is my therapy and music is what
