How Trustpilot determines if reviews are written by a real customer or an AI bot

How do you know if that glowing review was written by a real customer or by a bot?

According to Anoop Joshi, Chief Trust Officer at Trustpilot, it’s almost impossible to tell by content alone.

“Just looking at the content of a review, it is incredibly hard to spot what is genuine and what's fake. I can show you five reviews all looking very similar and one might be fake, four might be real, but you can’t tell.”

This isn’t about spelling errors or tone anymore. Trustpilot’s AI models analyse IP data, device type, click paths, and more across a 300-million-review dataset to catch patterns no human could spot.

Fake content is easier to generate than ever, but getting it onto platforms undetected is another story.
